The site Playmation’s use of color and texture is impressive and has a great use of ‘that wicked worn look’. The page is presented as an open book on a table ready for you to view and peruse. Texture in the site is brought in by the images of the wooden surface which represent the table. The notebook itself is one that has uneven pages, some slightly torn and jagged. These elements provide a realistic view of actually flipping the pages of this notebook and finding this page with all the illustrations.
It is such a clever way of representing an art that was purely hand done and now can be computer generated. I think it honors the essence of the art. The wood color and monochromatic brown shades and tints used through out the page complement the multi colors of the illustrations. The faded pages and the white of the extra pages sticking out of the notebook are a few of the subtle color treatments that make this website work.
The navigation of the page is pretty straight foward, the presentation of the page naturally guides you to click on the image icons. This is also internet trent where navigation is presented by images and each image either expands or directs you to a different link. In playmation, the hand icon indicates a link which opens the images and enlarges them. There is no set direction of the page, the creator leaves the viewer to decide. One guide that may be provided is that newest content is placed at the top left page, this then makes a user assume that the images/illustrations on the bottom of the right page are the oldest.
Given the layout of the site, the page is easy to scan in a couple of seconds as all content is provided and only if really interested would one click on the images. The links at the bottom of the page lead to a blog and other social media sites. Body copy/text is non existence on this site.
The page is a great page for an illustration page, it works great to show featured works of the artist and extends to show the combination of old and new style of illustrating. Some of the links do not work which is not great seeing the website is active and has been recently updated. One wishes the creator of the site took the trouble to update the links or get rid of them. I also think that the illustrations could use small narrations to give background the the artist who also does not mention who they are. THis website presents itself as a second or third draft of the actual website to be designed. It feels incomplete.
