  • Homework: Exercise 1: Homepage
  • Challenge: Format the syllabus with HTML

Class 2 – 9/8 – File Management, Hyperlinks, CSS and Images

  • Lecture: File management
  • Review: Basic HTML add <header><nav><footer><article><blockqoute><em><strong><a>
  • Demo: How to setup your files, create links, style text and insert graphics using Text-Wrangler.
  • Challenge: Style the syllabus with CSS
  • Read: The Principles of Beautiful Web Design: Chapter 1: Layout and Composition
  • Handout: Review 1
  • Due: Homepage version 1

Class 3 – 9/15 – Doing layout with HTML & CSS

  • Review: File Management, Linking & Images
  • Demo: External style sheets, positioning elements
  • Read: Don’t Make Me Think: Pages 30-43
  • Due: Sketches for Project 1
  • Due: homepage version 2 which should now include a link to your formatted syllabus and have some style
  • Due: Review 1

Class 4 – 9/22 – Studio Time

Block 2 – Single Page Site

Class 5 – 9/29 – Critique

Class 6 – 10/6 – Domains & hosts: the cost of publishing online

  • Lecture: Domains, hosts and other things to consider when designing for the web
  • In class: Begin Sketches and rough graphics
  • Demo: Fireworks
  • Homework: Begin creating the layout and graphics for your single page site
  • Due: homepage version 3 – which should now have a layout that uses div tags, classes and id’s

Class 7 – 10/13 – Slicing and an intro to jQuery plugins

  • Demo: Slicing your layout in Fireworks and taking it into Dreamweaver
  • Demo: jQuery – single page scrolling
  • Graphics should be complete, ready slicing, and coding started
  • Begin Slicing & Coding
  • Due: Review 2

Class 8 – 10/20 –  Studio Time

  • Wrap up coding and troubleshooting Project 2

Class 9 – 10/27 – Studio Time

  • Read: Don’t Make Me Think: Pages 50-93

Block 3 – Final Project

Class 10 – 11/3 – Critique Project 2

  • Critique: Project 2

    • In class brainstorm ideas for Final site in assigned groups

Class 11 – 11/10 – Navigation & Information Architecture

  • Lecture: Types of Navigation and bread-crumbing

Class 12 – 11/17 – Studio Time / Working Critique

  • In Class: Written content should be complete. Graphics should be complete and ready for a working crit.

Class 14 – 12/1 – Final Exam
